Guild Builders will encourage children and young teens in all areas of the theatre arts and endeavor to foster a life-long appreciation through the production and performance of plays and/or musicals.

Description: Guild Builders is the Actors Guild of Parkersburg's youth theatre program, offered at no cost to fourth through ninth graders in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Participants meet on Saturday mornings October - March from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Actors Guild, located at the corner of Eighth and Market streets in downtown Parkersburg. Each week students receive instruction in the performing arts. At the end of the program, students are part of a production for which the entire cast and crew are comprised of Guild Builders students. You may download a PDF of the current program brochure.

Saturday morning classes are led by staff, guest instructors, and professional artists.

The classes introduce participants to all aspects of the theatre arts:

  • Performance Basics – learn and use skills related to blocking, projection, stage presence, stage movement, line memorization, etc.
  • Playwriting and Producing – write and present original scenes on stage with the guidance of a visiting playwright.
  • Acting – learn how to present a character on stage.
  • Set Construction – learn about building a set by working on your show.
  • Music & Dance – receive instruction on singing and dancing as part of the performance preparation.
  • Makeup – learn about basic stage makeup as well as special techniques.
  • Costumes – work on costumes that help to tell the audience about the character.

Opening Session: October 5, 2013, for new students/ October 12, 2013, for returning students.

When registering for the 2013-2014 season of Guild Builders, prospective students will select one of the following options:

  1. Be a part of the large-cast, musical production of Annie JR
  2. Be a part of the Technical Group. The Technical Group will focus on technical skills and will comprise the technical crew for all performances of the musical.

All students will receive the basic instruction listed above, but each of the above options presents a different focus as the performance dates draw near (rehearsal/performance skills versus technical skills).

Frequently Asked Questions about Guild Builders:

How much does it cost to participate in Guild Builders?
There is no fee for the program! Participants will have to occasionally purchase required personal supplies such as make-up, cassette tapes and inexpensive tennis shoes for dance. This cost is minimal and arrangements can be made if the cost is a hardship for the family.

What classes and workshops are offered throughout the year?
Basic classes and workshops offered each year include music, voice, stage direction, movement, make-up, technical roles, and playwriting. Specialty classes change each year but have included in the past safe stage combat, accents, animal movement, and clogging. Playwriting: Mr. Daniel Kehde, a professional playwright from Charleston, will teach students the basics of playwriting and assist students in the creation and production of original scenes to be presented to the other students during the class. Teaching Artist Residencies: Additionally, two other professional artists will present classes in their specialties through our Teaching Artist Residency program.

What is the time commitment to participate in the program?
Participation in the program requires a commitment by members and their parents for prompt and faithful attendance on Saturday mornings and at mid-week rehearsals as required once the production's rehearsal process begins in November. Parents. Guild Builders is provided at no cost in part due to the participation of the volunteer staff and parents. Therefore, parental participation is a requirement. During the year, parents are scheduled to assist 4 times during the year. (We will work around your schedule.) Many parents enjoy learning, too, and end up helping out more than is required! A full calendar is available for download.

What is the Technical Group?
The Technical Group is Guild Builders’ tech-only component of the program. At the beginning of the year, all students will participate in all of the classes each week. Beginning on November 23, however, the cast of the musical will hold auditions, and the Technical Group will begin focusing more on the technical work of the theatre. They will still participate with all Guild Builders students in the classes; however, as the cast rehearses for the musical, the Technical Group will work on their technical skills. Although these students will not appear in Annie JR, their work will also culminate in the production: they will have worked on constructing the set, and they will make up the technical crew for each performance. How Can My Child Participate?
To register, complete the online registration form which will be available on June 15.  On that date, the application will be available on this website.  Returning students and those who were on the wait list last year will be given priority during the first week.  After June 22, however, all applicants will be accepted in the order in which they register.  (For example, if a new student registers on June 15, he/she will be added to the acceptance list on June 23 in front of the other new applicants from that week who registered after him/her but after the returning students who registered during that week.)

Applicants are accepted into the program on a first-come-first-served basis in the order in which their applications are received. Students will be placed on a waiting list after the cast and Technical Group positions are filled.
