OVERVIEW:
In Salzburg, Austria, just before World War II, a problematic postulant nun, Maria, is sent from her abbey to be governess to the seven children of a widower, Navy Captain Georg von Trapp. Maria falls in love with the children and eventually the Captain. After they marry, he is ordered to accept a commission for the German navy. They devise a plan to flee Austria and the Nazis with their children. Along the way they sing such familiar songs as “Do-Re-Mi”, “My Favorite Things”, “Edelweiss”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “The Sound of Music”.
It is rated G for General Audiences.
PRINCIPAL ROLES:
Maria Rainer (20-35, Soprano) A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey. She is free spirited, warm, and gentle, yet determined.
Captain Georg von Trapp (35-45, Baritone) A retired Austrian naval officer. He is trying to suppress sadness over the death of his wife with his military demeanor, but underneath is a loving father.
Max Detweiller (30-45, Tenor/Baritone) A true friend of the von Trapp family. A charming man who is sophisticated and enjoys the good life.
Elsa Schrader (35-45, Mezzo Soprano) A baroness engaged to von Trapp. She is elegant, dignified, and mature.
Mother Abbess (40+, Soprano with wide vocal range) A very strong head of the Abbey. She is motherly, understanding, authoritative, but kind.
The von Trapp Children:
Liesl (16, Mezzo) The oldest child. She is blossoming into a young lady and cares very deeply for her younger siblings.
Friedrich (14) He has a tough exterior and is trying to be “the man” of the family.
Louisa (13) She has a rebellious attitude.
Kurt (10) He is mischievous yet gentle.
Brigitta (8) She is smart and reads a lot.
Marta (7) She is very sweet and loving.
Gretel (6) The youngest child. She is the cute “baby” of the family.
FEATURED ROLES:
Sister Berthe (30+, Alto) Mistress of Novices. She is straight-laced and less tolerant than other nuns.
Sister Margaretta (30+, Mezzo) Mistress of Postulants. She is kind and understanding.
Sister Sophia (30+, Soprano) A pious nun who sticks with the rules.
Rolf Gruber (17, Low Tenor) A telegram delivery boy who is wooing Liesl. He is a suggestive young man who becomes a Nazi soldier.
Franz (30+, Non-Singing) The von Trapp butler. He is formal and very German.
Frau Schmidt (30+, Non-Singing) The von Trapp housekeeper. She is efficient and stoic.
Herr Zeller (40+, Non-Singing) A typical Nazi official. He is stern and unpleasant.
