AUDITION INFORMATION
Summary
It's a "big bright beautiful world" for everyone's favorite ogre in SHREK THE MUSICAL JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and hit Broadway musical. In a faraway kingdom, the hermit ogre Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale creatures: outlaws who've been cast off by Farquaad, a tiny ruler with big ambitions. Shrek and wise-cracking Donkey travel to Duloc to confront Farquaad where they are handed a task - rescue feisty Princess Fiona from the Dragon-guarded tower and the swamp will be theirs. But a fairy tale wouldn't be complete without unexpected twists and turns along the way.
Audition Information
Auditions times are by appointment October 10th -11th with callbacks October 12th. Complete the audition form here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScf-1eVEekEFWfkYNaat5092IyCHass6ffj1jPfmxlXGx_onA/viewform?usp=header no later than Wednesday October 7th. Walk in auditioners accepted October 11th, but will be limited to auditioning only for characters already scheduled that date. Once you have completed the form you will be emailed an appointment time and audition materials. Character information for auditions
Actors of all racial backgrounds, gender expressions, and body types are encouraged to audition. Both male and female presenting actors will be considered for any role, however the genders and pronouns of the characters will not change. Due to a few characters being portrayed as different ages throughout the show and a variety of species of fairytale creatures, height will likely be considered as a casting factor in several roles. All music has been adapted for young/unchanged voices.
Shrek is the titular character, Shrek starts the show in self imposed isolation. Will a bunch of zany fairytale characters, a chatterbox Donkey, and a less than perfect Princess help open his heart? Shrek has short solos but multiple duets. Bold characterization and excellent comic timing and sarcasm is a must. Strong chemistry with Donkey and Fiona required. Mike Myers’ unique Scottish-Canadian accent is a plus.
Fiona is a princess with less polish. Role requires strong dancing skills (tap preferred), harmony, powerhouse soloist, and the characterization/self actualization to not take manners too seriously. Must have strong chemistry with Shrek and Donkey. Actors wishing to portray young and teen Fiona should also select this role on the audition form.
Donkey is a brash, fast-talking character with a strong stage presence and the ability to carry a scene by himself. Donkey has several solos—strong singing skills and comedic timing are a must. Must have excellent “buddy comedy” chemistry with Shrek.
Farquaad requires an actor who excels in physical comedy. This role likely to be cast as a taller actor and played kneeling. Farquaad is a featured soloist and needs to have a strong stage presence to carry the scene. Dance experience preferred, and—due to the strong physicality of the role—staff is looking for an actor who is dedicated to personal practice time including training and stretching at home during off days.
Dragon is a breakout role for a young girl with a lot of soul and spunk. She is a ferocious fire-breathing dragon but finds a surprising love in Donkey. Tremendous presence and a good pop singing voice are a must. Depending on cast makeup, this role may also play Mama Ogre.
Gingy/Sugarplum Fairy requires a strong soloist. Puppetry experience is a plus. Depending on cast makeup, this role may also play Mama Ogre.
Pinocchio is a sassy, sour compulsive liar frequently betrayed by his magical nose. Requirements include ability to sing well, great comic timing, and convey character through movement.
Other Fairytale creatures (approximately 14) including wicked Witch, Bear family, three Pigs, Granny Wolf, Peter Pan, Tinkerbelle, ugly Duckling, Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather. These roles require good singing and dancing skills and excellent characterization and harmonies. If wishing to audition for one of these roles, please select Pinocchio on audition form.
Papa Ogre/Duloc Dancing Head/Bishop is a strong singer and versatile character actor to be utilized in a variety of roles throughout the show. Please select Pinocchio on audition form.
Guard/Knight- these characters are Farquaad’s enforcers as well as trapped Knights in Dragon’s Keep. They need to have good coming timing and basic dancing abilities. These (approximately 4) roles require minimal singing.
Young Shrek/Puss in Boots/Grumpy-this character requires an actor who is small in stature with good comic timing and the ability to command attention. Select Guard/Knight to audition for these roles.
Duloc Dancer/Skeleton/Rat- Strong dance experience including tap is preferred for these roles. Ensemble singing and harmonies required. These (approximately 5) roles require strong character actors who are team players and willing to portray multiple characters through a variety of movement.
Blind Mice- these three roles require both strong dance skills (as they are also portraying tap dancing rats, skeletons, and Duloc dancers) as well as characterization and enunciation. These roles are back up dancers and harmonies for Donkey in “Make a Move” and will also appear as the traditional storytellers as “love is blind.”
Performances begin January 29th through February 14th with daytime performances February 3rd and 10th likely.
