OVERVIEW:
Based on the much-loved 2003 film, in this heart-warming musical, Santa narrates the story of Buddy, an apparently oversized elf who has been raised in the North Pole.  Buddy is devastated when he learns he is really a human.  Santa must reveal to his wannabe elf that baby Buddy mistakenly crawled into Santa's bag of gifts on Christmas Eve many years ago and was transported to the North Pole on Santa’s return home.

With Santa's blessing, Buddy decides to travel to New York City to find his real father. He is shocked to learn that his own father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn't believe in Santa. How can this be?  Buddy decides to change his new family and bring the true meaning of Christmas back into New York City. Along the way, he discovers friendship, romance, and his true identity. Elf is a modern-day holiday classic that spreads Christmas cheer for all to hear! It is rated PG

CHARACTERS:
Buddy
Buddy is the perfect elf! He is good-natured, he means well, and he is happy all the time. There’s only one problem: he’s not an elf; he’s an adult human. Buddy has an infectious personality with outrageous genuine enthusiasm for everything he does.  This role requires a strong mover with a great sense of physical comedy.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: C5
Vocal range bottom: Ab2

Jovie
Buddy’s girlfriend.  Jovie works as a store elf at Macy’s, but don’t be mistaken. She doesn’t quite exude the Christmas spirit. She is kind of cynical because of the men she has dated and a bit tough around the edges. She is caught off guard by Buddy’s big heart and his complete adoration.  This role requires a strong belting singing voice.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: D5
Vocal range bottom: G3

Walter Hobbs
Walter Hobbs, Buddy’s real father, is so focused on keeping his job that he is not making time
for his family. He can be stern and unemotional at times, but ultimately he learns to recommit to his family. He has a strong, authoritative presence, but he reveals a softer side.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: G4
Vocal range bottom: A2

Emily Hobbs
Emily Hobbs is Walter’s devoted wife who would prefer her husband to spend a little more time
at home. She is a problem solver and an excellent mother who is doing everything she can to
provide a positive family dynamic. She has a witty NYC sense of humor and warmth.  This role requires a strong belting voice.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: Eb5
Vocal range bottom: F3

Michael Hobbs
Michael Hobbs is the smarter-than-average son of Walter and Emily. He quickly
befriends his new adult brother, Buddy, and does everything he can to make sure Buddy
becomes a permanent part of the family. He has an unchanged voice and can be played by someone approximately 9 – 13 years old.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: G5
Vocal range bottom: F3

Deb
Deb, Walter’s secretary, has the big responsibility of keeping her boss and the whole office
happy. She does this by sharing her positive attitude with everyone. She has a pleasant
demeanor, yet efficient work ethic.  Requires an excellent belting voice.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: Eb5
Vocal range bottom: D4

Santa Claus
Santa Claus has a lot on his plate during the Christmas season, and it is starting to show. He is
annoyed with the Elves, tired of lying to Buddy and sad that people seem to be losing their
Christmas spirit. He is still the same jolly old St. Nick underneath it all, but the job is getting to
him.  Santa is a somewhat cranky man while trying hard to keep his holiday spirit.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: E4
Vocal range bottom: A2

Manager
The manager is a terrific featured acting role for a performer with good comedic timing. As the
manager of Macy’s, he is doing everything he can to make sure all the employees stay in line.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: F#4
Vocal range bottom: B2

Mr. Greenway
He is one of the crankiest businessmen around. He is the big Boss with a commanding presence and a tyrannical workaholic.
Gender: Male
Vocal range: Baritone

Chadwick
One of Walter’s right-hand men.  He’s desperate to keep his job, and perhaps the dumber of the two.  Part of the Ensemble.

Matthews
One of Walter’s right-hand men.  He’s desperate to keep his job and is the schemer of the two.  Part of the Ensemble.
