On Golden Pond
“On Golden Pond” will be on-stage at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg in the month of June.
Auditions are on March 24 and March 25 in the Actors Guild rehearsal hall (there will be signs at the theater to point the way to the rehearsal hall) at 7:00 on both evenings.
“On Golden Pond” was written by Ernest Thompson. It is a play in two acts.
Synopsis: An elderly couple spends their summers in a cottage by a lake in Maine. The husband’s health issues become a concern, as does his difficult relationship with his daughter. When the daughter and her fiancé arrange for his son to spend time at the cottage, new life is breathed into everything. “On Golden Pond” is a comedy with some tender, serious moments.
Character Descriptions: (The ages listed for the characters are those stated in the script. Casting decisions may require venturing from the stated age.)
• Norman – (age 80) A retired professor who uses his sharp, disarming wit to mask the fears and frustrations arising out of his failing health and fading memory; loving and vulnerable with Ethel; ultimately, a likable chap; not physically frail.
• Ethel – (age 69) A spirited, life-loving, nurturing soul and soulmate to Norman; unfazed by his barbs; saddened to watch him decline but determined that to enjoy the time they have left together; occasionally comes across as a bit scattered, but truly has a handle on everything.
• Chelsea – (age 42) A bright, capable woman, still hurting from the regret of not having lived up to Norman's expectations; she is athletic and quick; divorced; holds on to past hurts a little too long.
• Bill Ray – (age 45) A successful Los Angeles dentist who is initially unnerved by Norman, but ultimately gains his respect; comes across a little stuffy at times, but that is a response to him finding his way into this family dynamic.
• Billy Ray – (age 13) Bill's son; underneath a cool/tough front is in need of and responds enthusiastically to the love and attention he receives from Ethel and Norman; uses some adult language.
• Charlie Martin – (age 44) The local mailman and childhood friend of Chelsea who has always had a crush on her; his laugh is contagious (albeit used a little too often) and distinctive.
Audition selections will be available at this site very soon.
